Calculation Formula

Each ETF tracks a fixed fraction of the reference asset. The ratio drifts slowly over time as fund fees are deducted, so it is recalculated from the latest prices.

IAU Ratio0.018651

IAU = XAUUSD × 0.018651

XAUUSD = IAU ÷ 0.018651

GLD Ratio0.090976

GLD = XAUUSD × 0.090976

XAUUSD = GLD ÷ 0.090976

GLDM Ratio0.019631

GLDM = XAUUSD × 0.019631

XAUUSD = GLDM ÷ 0.019631

How to Use This Calculator

This calculator converts between the gold spot price and the price of the three largest physically-backed gold ETFs. There are four rows, and each one works in a single direction:

  • Gold → ETF— enter a gold spot price to see what IAU, GLD and GLDM would be worth at that level. This answers “if gold reaches $5,000, what will my GLD shares be worth?”
  • IAU → Gold — enter an IAU share price to reverse-calculate the implied gold spot price.
  • GLD → Gold and GLDM → Gold — the same conversion using GLD or GLDM as the input.

Every calculation uses the live ratio derived from the reference prices shown at the top of the page, so the numbers always reflect current market conditions.

What are GLD, IAU and GLDM?

GLD (SPDR Gold Shares), IAU (iShares Gold Trust) and GLDM (SPDR Gold MiniShares) are the three largest physically-backed gold ETFs. Each share represents a fractional interest in gold bullion held in a vault, which makes them the simplest way to hold gold in a brokerage account.

The differences come down to cost and share size. GLD is the oldest and most liquid, but charges 0.40% a year. IAU charges 0.25% and GLDM charges 0.18%, making them cheaper for long-term holders. IAU and GLDM also trade at a much lower share price, which makes them easier to buy in round lots.

One thing worth knowing: a gold ETF tracks the LBMA gold price — the London spot benchmark — not the COMEX futures price. The two usually differ by 0.5% to 1% because futures embed the cost of carry. This calculator uses the spot price for that reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert the gold price to IAU?▼

Multiply the gold spot price by the IAU ratio, which is shown in the Calculation Formula section. For example, if gold is $4,000 and the IAU ratio is 0.018800, then IAU = 4,000 × 0.018800 = $75.20. The calculator applies the current ratio automatically.

How do I convert the gold price to GLD?▼

Multiply the gold spot price by the GLD ratio. For example, if gold is $4,000 and the GLD ratio is 0.091000, then GLD = 4,000 × 0.091000 = $364.00. Enter the gold price in the first row and GLD updates instantly.

What is the difference between GLD, IAU and GLDM?▼

All three hold physical gold bullion in a vault and track the LBMA gold price. They differ in share size and fees: GLD represents roughly 1/10 oz per share with a 0.40% expense ratio, while IAU and GLDM represent roughly 1/50 oz per share with expense ratios of 0.25% and 0.18% respectively. The practical difference is cost and share price — the gold exposure is the same.

Why does the calculator only update during US market hours?▼

Gold ETFs trade on US exchanges from 9:30 to 16:00 ET. Outside those hours the ETF price is frozen at the last close while the gold spot price keeps moving, so the ratio between them would drift. We only sample when both markets are trading, which keeps the ratio accurate.

How often is the data updated?▼

Reference prices are sampled every five minutes while both the gold market and US equity market are open, and the page refreshes at most every ten minutes. The timestamp at the top of the calculator shows when the current prices were captured.

How accurate are the calculations?▼

Ratios are calculated from live reference prices and carry high internal precision, while displayed values are rounded to two decimals. Keep in mind that ETF shares can trade at a small premium or discount to their underlying gold, so the calculated value is a theoretical fair value rather than a quoted price.
