What JEPI is

JEPI is actively managed and works in two parts. The equity sleeve holds a portfolio of lower-volatility US large-caps, chosen for stable earnings rather than for yield. The income comes from a second layer: JPMorgan sells out-of-the-money S&P 500 call options, but does it through equity-linked notes written by counterparty banks rather than by trading options directly. That structure matters at tax time — the premium arrives as ordinary income, so almost none of a JEPI distribution is treated as return of capital. Distributions are monthly and vary with option premiums.

Who it suits. Investors who want high current monthly income and understand that the option overlay caps upside in strong markets. Because the distributions are ordinary income, it fits a tax-advantaged account better than a taxable one.
