What VYM is

VYM screens on forecast yield rather than on a growth record, which makes it the broadest of the major US dividend funds — several hundred holdings against roughly a hundred in SCHD. Real estate investment trusts are excluded, since their distributions are structurally different from ordinary dividends. Because it is market-cap weighted and takes whatever the screen returns, the fund owns a wide slice of corporate America rather than a curated list, and its top holdings change less than a concentrated fund's would. Yield sits in the middle of the range and dividend growth has been the slowest of the three largest US funds.

Who it suits. Investors who want wide diversification and a reasonable starting yield, and who are not relying on the payout to grow quickly.
