What SCHD is
SCHD holds around 100 US companies selected in two steps. The index first requires at least ten consecutive years of dividend payments, which removes anything that has cut or skipped a payout. The survivors are then ranked on four fundamentals — cash flow to total debt, return on equity, dividend yield and five-year dividend growth — and the top 100 by market capitalisation make the fund. The screen leans toward mature, cash-generative businesses, which in practice means a heavy weighting to energy, consumer staples and healthcare. It is the largest dividend ETF by assets and charges among the lowest fees in the category.
Who it suits. Investors who want a growing income stream from established US companies and are comfortable with a portfolio concentrated in roughly 100 names.
