What QYLD is
QYLD is the original covered call ETF, and its mechanics are the simplest here: hold the Nasdaq-100, sell at-the-money calls on it every month, distribute the premium. Writing at the money rather than out of the money means it collects more premium than its rivals but surrenders essentially all of the index's upside — in a strong year for technology it will badly lag. It has no active management layer, so what you get is the index exposure with the returns converted into distribution, year in and year out. Total return over a decade has trailed the index by a wide margin.
Who it suits. Investors who want the highest possible current distribution from a mechanical, rules-based strategy and have accepted the capped upside. It is the most yield-at-any-cost option on this page.
